Demonstrating the presence or absence of species with eDNA

With ORVIdetect we are able to measure invasive exotics in water and silt samples taken from surface waters. Species such as the American Red Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii), the Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), the American Bull Frog (Rana catesbeiana) and the Topmouth gudgeon (Pseudorasbora parva) are detectable with eDNA.

With eDNA methods all sorts of animals can be detected. This brings many advantages in all kinds of situations, for example to demonstrate quickly whether a rare fish or amphibian species is (still) present at a specific location. Furthermore, the presence of species that have a very secretive way of life can be determined in this way.

eDNA analyses on aquatic species are the most commonly used. Think of fish such as the European weatherfish (Misgurnis fossilis), the spined loach (Cobitis taenia); or amphibians such as the Great Crested Newt (Triturus cristatus) and Common Spadefoot toad (Pelobates fuscus).

Developments in the field of DNA analysis are fast. Water quality managers and regulators see the added value of DNA analyses. We are at the forefront of these developments by offering a wide range of DNA analyses and focusing on robotisation and automation.

We place high demands on the quality of our analyses and apply strict protocols in our laboratory. Our eDNA analyses are developed with our own ORVprime software. For the execution we use high quality robots and thermocyclers. Orvion is independent and not affiliated with ecological consultancies or governments. We deliver the data you need quickly and expertly.

Having DNA analyses carried out is simple. Orvion supplies you with the sterile sampling kit and protocol. Then you take the samples yourself. If required, we can take care of the sampling for you. After receipt, we analyse the samples and you receive the analysis results within ten working days.

In the Autumn of 2016 an eDNA project was carried out in collaboration with RAVON, the Hoogheemraadschap van Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard (HHSK) (District Water Control Board of Schieland), Oasen, Natuur- en Vogelwerkgroep Krimpenerwaard (NVWK) (Nature and Bird Workgroup of Krimpernerwaard) and the Zuid-Hollands Landschap(South Holland Landscape).
