We performed a biological source remediation in a residential location in The Hague (Gillesstraat). In the treated source zone we measured PCE (20,000 µg/l), TCE (2,900 µg/l), CIS (7,300 µg/l) and VC (<80 µg/l). We are grateful to the municipality of The Hague for releasing the data.
The task was accomplished by six trillion Dehalococcoides bacteria that were cultivated in our laboratory. We mixed the bacteria with 5100 litres of carbon source (lactic acid and acetic acid) and 424 cubic metres of groundwater. Six separate doses of this mixture were put into the ground. The bacteria broke down the PCE and TCE contaminants within two years.
The Jacob Gillesstraat in the Hague is a built-up residential area. It was therefore not desirable to have above-ground systems present for long periods. Using a groundwater model we designed a remediation approach for easy dosing. A system without fixed piping, where once every six months biomass and carbon source were dosed from a small truck.
The authority, the Haaglanden Environmental Service, approved the remediation result:
“The results show that the source remediation objective has been amply achieved”
